The 2016 edition of the Wuhan Open is underway this week, featuring some of the most prominent names on the WTA Tour.
Top eight seeds have been granted a direct entry to the second round. Angelique Kerber leads the way as usual, who is coming in fresh from a break after her remarkable feat at the Flushing Meadows. World no. 3 Garbine Muguruza has been seeded second whose form seemed to have dropped over the last few weeks. She last played in WTA Tokyo, where she lost in the quarterfinal to Elina Svitolina. Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep too will be playing in the event as the third and fourth seed respectively. The Pole has some momentum on her, as she played in Tokyo last week, while Halep is coming off here straight from her quarterfinal defeat in the US Open. Other top 10 players to feature here are Karolina Pliskova and Madison Keys. Pliskova's stunning turnaround in the US Open series wasn't reflected in Tokyo last week, as she lost her opening round game to the Aliaksandra Sasnovich. A similar trend was seen for Keys too.
Apart from them, Carla Suarez Navarro and Venus Williams are another big names to be playing here. It is hard to predict a victor at this stage as this tournament can pan out in any direction.

The 2015 Wuhan Open will be the second edition in tournament history, which makes this event one of the youngest WTA Tournaments.
While it does not yet have a prestigious history for obvious reasons, the organizers still managed to lure in a lot of talent last year. This was perfectly demonstrated during the 2014 final, where a two-time Grand Slam champion faced a youngster who was also already a Grand Slam finalist at the time. In fact, the eventual winner Petra Kvitova was the one who defeated Eugenie Bouchard in last year’s Wimbledon final, to repeat that feat a couple months later in Wuhan. With its $2,440,070 total prize money, the Wuhan Open is one of the more lucrative events at that level. This naturally attracted the best players this year as well, with as many as six players representing the top 10. The only missing competitors are world number one Serena Williams, world number five Lucie Safarova, world number six and fresh US Open winner Flavia Pennetta and world number seven Agnieszka Radwanska.
In their absence, the main favorites are top seed Simona Halep, second seed Maria Sharapova and of course the reigning champion and world number four Czech Kvitova, who could be the first repeat champion in tournament history.
