The Shenzhen Open is an outdoor hard court tournament played annually in Shenzhen, China. Being the fourth edition of the tournament, the Open is a fairly new competition, but one with a rather substantial prize money currently standing at half a million dollars.
While the reigning champion Simona Halep will not try to defend her 2015 title, the organizers managed to bring in some quality players, including two top players who are currently amongst the top 10 players in the world. Those two players are world number five Agnieszka Radwanska and world number six Petra Kvitova (who is already out). Somewhat curiously, they will (were) not only be the only top 10 performers in the main draw, but the only ones who are currently in the top 30. As this year's event will only be the fourth in tournament history, we don't have a long champion list. The former world number two and two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na (who retired in 2014) won the first two editions to be followed up by Halep's victory last year. The Romanian will compete in Brisbane this year leaving her title up for grabs. In her absence the two clear favorites would have been Radwanska and Kvitova, but the latter unfortunately had to retire during her first round match.
Conversely, the Polish former world number two has already got through her first through matches and will participate in the quarterfinal on January 7th.
