The WTA Tour plays in Rome, Italy this week, for the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, which is an outdoors tournament played on red clay and a Premier level event for the WTA Tour. It is a tournament that has a prize purse of $2,168,400 and a singles draw of 56 with a doubles draw of 28. The next event to be played is the Brussels, Open, in Brussels, Belgium starting on May 21st. That is also a Premier Level event, and is played on red clay outdoors as well. However, the prize purse of $637,000 is smaller and so are the singles and doubles draws.
This is the one of the top events on the tennis calendar for both competitions. Chris Evert has won this tournament five times and Gabriela Sabatini and Conchita Martinez have won four each. The top seed for this event is Victoria Azarenka, with Maria Sharapova as the second seed. Petra Kvitova will be the third and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanksa is the fourth. Samantha Stosur will be the fifth seed for this event. Sixth and seventh seeds this year are Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark and France's Marion Bartoli. Na Li from China is eighth.

The WTA tour 2009 continues this week with the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome. The tournament is May 3rd through the 9th and will be played on outdoor clay courts. The WTA tour is presented by Sony Ericsson and this is the 66th time the Internazionali BNL d'Italia has been played.
The men's tournament was last week, but this week the women play for the prizes and titles. This tournament is also known as the Rome Masters, but called the Internazionali BNL d'Italia because of sponsorship reasons.
In 2008 we saw the clay court heat up as Jelena Jankovic defended her 2007 title in the final over Alize Cornet. Cornet was a qualifier and defeated two top players to get there Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anna Chakvetadze. This tournament may have been affected by two high profile withdrawals in the final rounds – Serena Williams due to a back injury – and World Number One Maria Sharapova, who injured her calf. A pairing of Taiwainese players Yung-jan Chan and Chia-jung Chuang led to them claiming the doubles trophy over Iveta Benesova. That was their first team Tier One title.
Your membership gives you full access to watch the best players in women's tennis play in singles and doubles tournament at the Foro Italico in Rome this week from Sunday, May 3rd to Saturday, May 9th.
