The 2016 Rio Open will be the third edition amongst the ladies, coming with a $250,000 total prize money which is significantly less than the ATP competition's total financial commitment.
In defense of the ATP, the WTA tourney belongs to the International level which is a notch below the ATP 500 status, if we want to compare the two. The reigning champion of the WTA Tournament is Sara Errani who has defeated the Slovakian Anna Schmiedlova in last year's final. The Italian will not try to defend her title, in fact the whole competition will be kind of disappointing. There will only be two top 50 players in the main draw and even they will not bring very high rankings, or at least not when we compare them to the very best. The top seeded player will be Teliana Pereira who is currently the 44th player in the world. She will be followed by world number 48 Johanna Larsson, world number 50 Danka Kovinic, world number 62 Christina McHale, world number 83 Polona Hercog, world number 90 Tatjana Maria and world number 104 Andreea Mitu.
Four of these players (Pereira, Larsoon, Hercog and Arruabarrena) have managed to win at least one WTA title during their careers, and it would not be a huge surprise if the eventual champion would turn out to be one of them.
