Quebec City will host the Coupe Banque Nationale Open this week, featuring some of the most intriguing names on the women's tour.
Being on the Canadian turf, it is of no surprise to see the local favourite Eugenie Bouchard as the top seed. Following her slip from the top 20, the world no. 48 has been working hard this year to get herself to the top again. She is coming in with a record of 30-20 already this year, still looking for her first title. Annika Beck of Germany is the second seed, who failed to move past the second rounds of the US Open series events. However, she did enjoy some consistency and wins on the tour for a short while during the mid season. Mirjana Lucic Baroni is the third seed, and also the most experienced player. However, she too is sailing in the same ship as Beck. Lastly, Julia Goerges is the fourth seed who is coming in with the best tally of 25-13.
Even though a title has evaded her this year, it is still possible that she may lift the trophy here. Other players such as Mona Barthel and Naomi Broady too will be playing in Quebec. Given the amount of talent here, there is surely going to be some quality tennis this week to watch.

The Coupe Banque Nationale (or as otherwise also known, the Tournoi de Quebec) is an annual outdoor hard court WTA Tournament held in Quebec, Canada. This year’s event will be the 23rd edition in tournament history and for a WTA Tier III tourney, the more than $250,000 total prize money offers a very lucrative opportunity for those who decide to compete in Quebec.
With the starting date being so close to the US Open, the organizers usually have a hard time luring top-tier talent in. This much is apparent when we take a look at the past winners as well. In the more than 20-year history of the tournament, there were only three winners who – at some point in their career – became Grand Slam champions. Even those players, however, won this event before they joined the very elite the WTA field had to offer. While not a Premier Mandatory event, the Tournoi de Quebec remains a prestigious tournament. The reigning champion is Mirjana Lucic Baroni who will return and try to defend her title which she won against Venus Williams last year.
The American just finished a rather long and emotional US Open campaign (losing to her sister, Serena in the quarterfinal) which means she won’t compete in this tournament. Outside of Lucic-Baroni, the other main favorite will be top seed Madison Keys.
