The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour is going to be in Slovenia this week for the Banka Koper Slovenia Open, a tournament that is played on outdoor clay for the another WTA title of the 2009 season and a prize purse of $220,000. The event in Portoroz has a draw of 32 and 16 and will be played on July 20th. The 2007 winner of this tournament was Tatiana Golovin, with a completely out of nowhere win in the final against the highly vocal crowd that supported her opponent. The sets were long in 2007, but at least it there were only three, and that was Golovin's second WTA Tour singles title of that year. Her opponant was Katarina Srebotnik.
Last year in Portoroz the event at the internazionali Femmilili di Tennis di Palermo saw Sara Errani take her first WTA Title of the year, and then move right along to take on the Portoroz event, winning the Banka Koper Solvenia Open making her match stream ten in a row. Previously she had simply maintained, reaching the quarters three different times, but this seemed to be a new Errani coming out of the background and slamming ball after ball.
It all started when she beat the number one seed, Maria Kirilenko, in two easy sets of 6-1 and 7-5, and played Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals. She beat her as well, in two sets once again, 6-4, 6-4. In the final she faced number four seed, Anabel Medina Garrigues from Spain and once again it was two sets later and Sara Errani was the top podium position at the tournament beating veteran Garrigues 6-3, 6-3. Don't miss the 2009 Banka Koper Slovenia Open. Get your membership today and be there when the action starts on June 20th.
