The Nurnberger Versicherungscup is an annual outdoor clay court tournament held in Nurnberg, Germany. The 2015 event will be the third edition in tournament history and will have a total prize money of $250,000. Being a very young tournament, there is no meaningful history when it comes to rivalries and multiple champions, but the organizers have managed to convince some elite players to join the main draw in each of the first two years of the event. Several top ten players traveled to Nurnberg in 2013 and 2014 and both edition crowned a very promising young talent in the end.
Both Simona Halep (2013 winner) and Eugenie Bouchard (2014 winner) have made their first ever Grand Slam final since, and although both of them ended up losing their match, they are consistent top 10 players and WTA champions. Bouchard only has one title at this point but only a matter of time until she starts to win more regularly. Halep is an 11-time WTA champion who should win her first Grand Slam trophy sooner rather than later. Curiously enough, neither player will compete at this year’s tournament. In their absence, the main favorite will probably be two home players, third seed Sabine Lisicki or second seed Angelique Kerber.
