The Marrakech Grand Prix is an annual clay court tournament held in Marrakesh, Morocco. The tourney belongs to the WTA Tour events. The total prize money for this year will be above $200,000. The 2015 tourney will be the 15th edition of the tournament.
Surprisingly, the organizers are still waiting for that first multiple winner who will manage to emerge victorious for the second time in the Marrakesh tournament’s history. Not only that hasn’t happened yet, actually there are only two players who made more than one final.
Anabel Medina Garrigues made (and lost) the 2008 final against Gisela Dulko, who defeated her in two extremely close sets (both were decided in tie-breaks). The Spaniard managed to emerge victorious the next year, that time against Ekaterina Makarova. The other multiple finalist was Simona Halep, who made the finals both in 2010 and 2011, only to lose in easy straight sets both times.
If Halep would enter this tournament, she would be the overwhelming favorite but the Romanian has moved on to bigger and better things since, trying to win her maiden Grand Slam tournament. In her absence, the main favorites will be world number 20 Garbine Muguruza and world number 22 Timea Bacsinszky.
