An outdoor hard court tournament, the Monterrey Open is annually held in Monterrey, Mexico. This year's edition will be the 8th in tournament history and the organizers managed to put together a rather impressive total prize money, totaling at a quarter of a million dollars.
The reigning champion of the event is the Swiss Timea Bacsinszky who competed in Doha last week, losing in the third round to eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro. Bacsinszky chose not to enter the Monterrey Open this time, which means that she will lose a fair amount of points in the ranking. The Swiss would have been the top seed with her current, 15th ranking. In her absence the top seed will be the Italian Sara Errani, followed by world number 22 Caroline Wozniacki, world number 25 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, world number 26 Johanna Konta, world number 33 Caroline Garcia, world number 44 Alison Van Uytvanck, world number 46 Danka Kovinic and world number 48 Timea Babos. The Russian Pavlyuchenkova is actually the record champion of the tournament with as many as three titles.
Out of the eight seeded players, Timea Babos has a Monterrey Open title as well, captured back in 2012. The Hungarian is unlikely to go all the way but the Russian could have solid chances throughout the week.

The 2015 Monterrey Open will be the 7th edition of the South American tournament. The total prize money for the event is $200.000, from which roughly $110.00 will go to the champion. Even though the tourney has only been around for six years, there is already a three-time champion.
The Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova went all the way in 2010, 2011, and 2013 as well. Last year she could not compete, and in her absence it was the Serbian Ana Ivanovic who ended up winning the tournament.
She defeated her compatriot Jovana Jaksic in the final rather easily, 6-2, 6-1. She is not just the reigning champion, but she will also be the top seed of the tournament. Among the seeded players, we can find the three-time champ Pavlyuchenkova (seeded 5th), the eight-time WTA titlist Sara Errani (2nd seed), or the four-time WTA champion Magdalena Rybarikova (8th seed).
She will start out the tournament against last year’s runner-up, the 21-year-old wild card entrant Jaksic. Although there are no overwhelming favorites at this tournament, it would not be a huge surprise if the Serbian Ivanovic would end up defending her title from last year.
