This happens at the outdoors on red clay and is worth more then two million dollars.
This tournamen started for the WTA back in 1996 and back then it was held as a headliner for the Roland Garros match. This is one of four premier tournaments on the calendar. Some of the players that will be participating in this tournament include Elena Vesnina, Serena and Venus Williams, as well as Marina Erakovic. The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour is going to Madrid, Spain for a combined tournament with the men of the ATP. The event is called the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open and it will be held May 8th through the 16th. This is a clay outdoors tournament and a Premier Level match, Last year, on May 17th Dinara Safina beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 to take her second Premier Level title on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in a row. Top seed this year is Serena Williams, who faces no one in the first round, receiving a bye. Others in the main draw include Nadia Petrova, Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva, defending champion Safina, Flavia Pennetta, Marion Bartoli and Jelena Jankovic. Ana Ivanovic is a wildcard for this event.

The WTA takes it's best players to Madrid this Saturday as the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open once again takes the center stage at the Park Manzanares in Madrid. The players will compete on outdoor clay courts, and there are some of the greatest tennis players in the WTA waiting in the wings to see if they'll be pulled into the draw.
This is the year's first tournament for the WTA in Madrid, being solely an ATP event prior to 2009. For the years previous to 2008, the tournament was held in the Madrid Arena on Indoor Courts. Then in 2008, the tournament moved to The Park Manzanares and this year, added the WTA competition. It is the 8th time the ATP has held this tournament in Madrid.
Dinara Safina has already received a bye in the first round of the singles, putting her in the second round against an unknown opponant. All four Rome Finalists receive byes, which will allow them to skip the first round entirely. Seeds for this tournament include Serena and Venus Williams, Russian Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova and eleven others.
The Estoril Open was the previous WTA Tournament to this one, which became a WTA Tournament in 1999.
