The reigning champions of the tournament are Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova. While the Russian is the record holder for the most finals, the Spaniard is actually the record champion as well with as many as four titles. Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka have also made the finals twice with the American winning both occasions and therefore being the record champion with two victories.

Back to Nadal, what’s remarkable is that he captured one of those titles when the tournament was actually still an indoor hard court event, back in 2005. That was one of the last years before the tourney became a clay court event and got pushed earlier on the calendar.

Outside of Nadal, Becker is also a four-time champion but he won all four of those titles while the tournament was still an indoor hard court event. When it comes to the top favorites for the 2015, 14th (7th for the ladies) edition of the tournament, things are pretty obvious for the men’s side.

With the absence of Novak Djokovic, Nadal will be the clear favorite. With the ladies, it will probably come down to one of the top performers, maybe Serena Williams or Sharapova.
