The WTA Tour will head to Instanbul, Turkey to play the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships, which is a tournament that happens starting the 25th of October. It will be played indoors on hard courts and it is one of the final two season ending championships of the WTA Tour, worth just shy of five million dollars. Only eight singles will be participating and no more than eight doubles. After this tournament, starting November 3rd, the very last one of the year will be held, the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali, Indonesia.
The players that will be participating in this tournament include Vera Zvonareva and Samantha Stosur on the singles side, as well as Maria Sharapovia and Caroline Wozniacki. Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka and Li Na have also qualified. In the doubles it will be Katarina Srebotnik and Kveta Peschlke as well as Lisa Raymond and Liezel Huber. The Women's Tennis Association heads to Istanbul, Turkey for a international level tournament known as the Istanbul Cup. This tournament takes place July 26th through August 1st and is worth $220,000 to these ladies. The surface is hard courts and the matches will be played outdoors with a singles draw of 32 and a doubles draw of 16. This tournament takes place at the Enka Arena and the top seed for this event is Ekatarina Makarova who is from Russia and Eirini Georgatou in the first round. Bojana Jovanovski is the second seed, hails from Serbia and will be going up against Elani Danilidou in round number one. Then, we have our third seed, Anna Chakvetadze, who is from Russia, and is facing Marta Domachowska, from Poland in round number one. This is just the beginning of a terrific set of player for the Istanbul Cup, held July 26th through August 1st.
The fourth seed for this event is Anastasiya Yakimova and the fifth seed is Sesil Karatancheva. The sixth seed for this Istanbul, Turkey tournament is Vesna Manasieva from Russia and the number seven seed is Anna Tatishvili. The eighth and final of the top eight is Alexandra Panova from Russia. Turkey will be the location for the 2009 Istanbul Cup, July 27th to August 2nd, 2009, and the women of the WTA will take to the outdoor hardcourts for a prize purse of $220,000 and even more prestige to add to their careers. Vera Avonareva is one of those players, the highest ranked player at the Cup and a certain fan favorite. But there will be others to watch as well. Other players making an appearance will include Patty Schnyder from Switzerland, who is ranked 19th, Anabel Medina Garrigues from Spain who is ranked just one spot above Schnyder, France's Aravane Rezai, ranked 39, and Italy's Sara Errani, ranked 38.
The tournament will be held at the ENKA Arena Court in Turkey, for the very first time and the WTA Istanbul Cup General Manager said that nearly half a million dollars in improvements had to be made to prepare for the cup, including making the court able to host 3000 fans. In addition to the players mentioned previously Turkey will bring it's own representatives in Ipek Senoglu, Oagla Buyukakcay, Premra Ozgen Basak Eraydin and Melis Sezer. This is just a few of the 22 players in the top 100 that will be playing in the 2009 Istanbul Cup, as well as the rest of the draws.
The WTA Istanbul Cup's Inaugural tournament was won by Venus Williams, and was held in 2005. Other winners since then have includes Shahar Peer, Agniezska Radwanska and Elena Dementieva.
