The 2016 Istanbul Cup will be an outdoor clay court tournament with a total prize money of $250,000. The second most lucrative WTA competition of the week, the tourney will held its 9th edition this year.
The reigning champion is the Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko who will try to defend her title as the third seed of the tournament. The seeds will go as follows: world number 34 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, world number 42 Yanina Wickmayer, the world number 43 Tsurenko, world number 59 Kirsten Flipkens, world number 61 Kovinic, world number 66 Nao Hibino, world number 67 Kateryna Bondarenko and world numbr 69 Johanna Larsson. The main favorites are the higher seeds of course, not just because of their ranking but also because they have winning experience on the WTA Tour. Schmiedlova has won two titles so far in her career, Wickmayer four, Tsurenko one, along with the Belgian Wickmayer who is also a one-time WTA titlist after winning the Bell Challenger in Quebec during the 2012 season.
Each and any of these players could find themselves holding up the trophy at the end of the week, but the main favorites are probably the top 3 seeds, including the defending champ herself.

The 2015 WTA Istanbul Cup will be played in Istanbul from Monday and will feature an array of brilliant players, competing for the trophy.
The world no. 15 Venus Williams has been seeded first. This will be her first professional tournament since the Wimbledon, where she made it to the fourth round before losing to her sister Serena Williams in straight sets. The second seed has been bagged by the 20 year old Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who reached her career high singles ranking of 17 last month. She was also the quarterfinalist in French Open and won the title in WTA Marrakech. Former world no. 1 Jelena Jankovic will also be playing in the event as the third seed, who moved up to 25th place in the world, following her run to the fourth round at SW19, where on the way she defeated the defending champion Petra Kvitova.
The Frenchwoman Alize Cornet has been seeded fourth, who hasn’t had a decent run on the tour since the Roland Garros, where she reached the fourth round. She finds herself in the same half as Daria Gavrilova and the Italian Camila Giorgi. For this tournament, Williams is certainly the favorite one and it will be definitely exciting to see if anyone can manage to overcome her.
