The Hopman Cup, this year sponsored by Hyundai, is also known as the ITF World Mixed Team Championships, and is played in Western Australia at the beginning of the year annually, pitting mixed teams from one country against another. This year, the tournament runs from December 31^st to January 7^th, and each team has one male player and one female player from a country. Every match is between two teams and it consists of three games, a women's singles match, a men's singles match and a mixed doubles match.

 

 

As far as the teams and players go, we have eight nations participating with Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych from Czech Republic, Marion Bartoli and Richard Gasquet from France, Anabel Medina Garrigues and Fernando Verdasco from Spain, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Mardy Fish from the USA. Also, Denmark being Caroline Wozniacki and Frederik Nielsen and Australia has Jarmila Gajdosova and Lleyton Hewitt. Bulgaria consists of Tsvetana Pironkova and Grigor Dimitrov and from China there is Li Na and Wu Di. The Hopman Cup begins with Group A which includes the top seed Serbia team made up of Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic. These two partners were also together in 2006, and are friends outside of the court. The second seeded team is Belgium and is made up of Justine Henin and Ruben Bemelmans. Henin hasn't played a match in the tour since Wimbledon and seemed to have trouble with her serve and her forehead in an exhibition match in December against Kim Clijsters. Group A also consists of the Kazakhstan team with Yaroslava Shvedova and Andrey Goubley and then Australia is team four in Group A, with Alicia Molik and Lleyton Hewitt.

 

 

Now we move onto Group B, which consists of Great Britain as the second seeded team with Laura Robson and Andy Murray as teammates, and then Italy's Franscesca Shiavone and Potito Starace making up the fourth seeded team. France is another team in Group B, with Kristina Mladenovic and Nicolas Mahut and then Bethanie Mattek Sands and John Isner from the United States makes up the last team in Group B.
