An outdoor hard event, the Hong Kong Open is held annually in Hong Kong. The total prize money of the tournament is $250,000, the same amount they offer to the competitors in Tianjin.
The similarities do not stop there. Just like the Tianjin Open, the Hong Kong competition will also hold its second edition this year. Considering the fact that the other tournament kind of swooped up the very best players this year, the level of competition at the Hong Kong Open won't be as strong. There would have been two top 10 players competing, but Garbine Muguruza had to withdraw from the tournament because of a left ankle injury. Now the only top 10 player in the main draw will be world number 10 Angelique Kerber. Similarly to Muguraza, unfortunately the reigning champion will also not be able to compete. The reason for Sabine Lisicki's absence is a knee injury. The German will be replaced by 2010 French Open winner Francesca Schiavone. Another major absentee is Belarussian Victoria Azarenka.
With her missing the tournament, Wang Yafan will have a chance to hone her skills against elite competition. The main favorites for the tournament will be top seed Angelique Kerber, second seed Venus Williams and third seed Jelena Jankovic.
