The Olympics are set to start this weekend, and the players have got themselves a final chance to practice before the big event in Florainopolis.
Jelena Jankovic has been awarded the top seed in the tournament and is on the prowl to get some much needed traction. With a record of 11-16 and no titles this year, the Serbian has been losing her form gradually. She is bound to face a lot of resistance in the tournament, mainly from the likes of Irina Camelia Begu and Monica Puig. Both players have been working hard this year, especially Puig, who has a tally of 38-19. She has made it to the semifinal in a couple of tournaments and has certainly got a lot of potential to progress ahead here. Her best performance was in Eastbourne, where she made it to the final four from the qualifiers. The 19 year old Latvian Jelena Ostapenko will also be playing in the event. Being the world no. 41 at such an early age, she is a definite threat to the other players.
While many of the players are struggling with their form, the presence of young players definitely makes this tournament a must one to watch. With US Open just a few weeks away, the results here will definitely help them to improve their form before the final Grand Slam.
