The WTA Tour will head to Fes, Morocco for the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesses Lalla Meryem. This is an International Level Tournament that starts on the 23rd of April, and is played outdoors on red clay. This tournament is worth $220,000 and it has a singles draw of 32 and a doubles draw of 16. The next one on the calendar is the Estoril Open, which happens in Estoril, Portugal starting the 30th of April. Another tournament that will be starting on April 30th is the Budapest Grand Prix, an international level event. They are both played outdoors on clay.
This is the only stop tha the WTA will make in Africa. This tournament has been hosted by three different cities since it began. In 2001 the tournament was hoste din Casablanca and then in Rabat starting in 2005. It wasn't until 2007 when the tournament began being hosted in Fez. Some of the tournament players include Marion Bartoli, Sventala Kuznetsova, Li Na, Dinara Safina and Patty Schnyder. The WTA Tour will head to Morocco for the next match on the calender, which will be held starting the same day as the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. These matches will be followed by the Barcelona Ladies Open, an international level event in Barcelona, Spain starting on April 25th and then they will play the Estoril Open, in Portugal, also starting on the 25th. The Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem is an international level event that will be held in Fes, Morocco. This is the only stop in Africa for the WTA Tour. The venue for this event is the Royal Tennis Club de Fez and last year Iveta Benesova was able to not only take home the singles title, but she and her partner took home the doubles win as well.
Right now, Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark leads the singles standings while Kim Clijsters is second and Russia's Vera Zvonareva is third. Victoria Azarenka is in fourth place right now and Na Li from China comes in fifth. Sixth and seventh in the Singles right now is Marion Bartoli and Maria Sharapova with Jelena Jankovic, Shuai Peng and Andrea Petkovic rounding out the rest of the top ten.
