The Copa Colsanitas Bogota is an annual outdoor clay court tournament on the WTA Tour held in Bogota Colombia. This year’s event will be the 23rd edition of it with Caroline Garcia as the reigning champion. The total prize money for the event is $250,000 which makes it a middle class tournament.
This is apparent from the annual lineups as well which although include very consistent top 50 players and sometimes even top 10 performers (like the 2013 winner Jelena Jankovic who is a former world number one), the truly elite never really shows up.
We also see that pattern when we take a look at the past winners. The all-time leader is Fabiola Zuluaga with five Bogota crowns. She was an excellent clay court specialist during her career (only winning clay court events, five out of six finals) but she peaked at the 16th position in the rankings.
Outside of her, Lourdes Dominguez and Paola Suarez are both two-time winners, emerging victorious in the early (Suarez) and mid (Dominguez) 2000’s. As neither Jankovic nor Garcia will compete at this year’s event, the top favorite will be Elina Svitolina from Ukraine and Monica Puig from Puerto Rico.

32 players will be participating in the singles’ draw this year. Jelena Jankovic, the 2013 champion at the tournament, is the top seed this year as well. She had defeated the then unseeded Paula Ormaechea 6-1, 6-2 to clinch what was her first WTA title in almost four years. Ormaechea is seeded seventh in this year’s tournament.
The other seeded players are the American Sloane Stephens, Italian Karin Knapp, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia, Carolina Garcia of France, American Vania King and Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain, who was the winner here in 2011.
16 teams will be participating in the doubles’ draw at the tournament. Timea Babos and Mandy Minella were the winners of the 2013 edition but are not participating this year. The pair of Vania King and Chanelle Scheepers is the top seeded pair this year.
Lino and her partner Arantxa Parra Santonja are the second seeds, followed by Irina-Camelia Begu and Maria Irigoyen as the third, and Sharon Fichman and Alexandra Panova as the fourth, rounding up the seeded positions.
