This week's tournament in Barcelona, Spain is called the Barcelona Ladies Open and it is an international level tournament that will take place outdoors on red clay for $220,000. Last year it was a surprise for everyone when Roberta Vinci took the Barcelona Ladies Open, in a final match against the then defending champion Maria Kirilenko. The match ended 6-0, 6-4. Vinci, who is from Italy, had only taken one singles title on the Tour previously. This tournament began in 2003, where it was originally called the ITF Cuitat de Barcelona with the original prize at $10,000. The first winner was Marta Fraga. The first venue was the Tennis Club la Salut and that very first final was from now star tennis player Ana Ivanovic.
