Novak Djokovic had an injury scare against Gilles Simon in the two player’s 3rd round encounter, when the Serbian fell on the grass, pressing his left shoulder awkwardly. Thankfully he turned out to be okay, and managed to finish the match in straight sets. Jo Wilfried Tsonga had his fair share of scary moments as well, but because of different reasons.

Before dispatching the Taiwanese Wang in the third round relatively easily, the Frenchman ran into two extremely tough five set battles in the first two rounds (against Melzer and Querrey). If that wasn’t enough, because of the rain delays, he had to play on 5 consecutive days just to reach the fourth round of the tournament.

The two players have already played 17 times against each other, and the most important match of those was the first one, in the 2008 Australian Open final, where Novak Djokovic defeated Jo Wilfried Tsonga in 4 sets. The Serbian leads the head to head 12-5, and he also leads the Frenchman 2-0 on grass.

Although Jo Wilfried Tsonga is a dangerous opponent with a huge serve and a bomb of a forehand, the conditions in Wimbledon are not necessarily in his favor. There are courts like in Halle, where the grass is extremely fast, and the ball stays low. In London, the court is not as fast, and the dirt packing under the grass is a lot harder, which allows the ball to bounce higher.

Those conditions suit Novak Djokovic’s game much more, which was apparent during both matches they played on the Wimbledon grass, in the 2011 Championships semi-final, and in the 2012 Olympics. The Serbian is the overwhelming favorite, and Jo Wilfried Tsonga has to have a huge serving day to have a realistic chance at advancing.
