Rafael Nadal was able to take his tie over Olivier Rochus with a final score of 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday which means that Spain's victories over Belgium now stands at 4-1, just a day after qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup. This was Nadal's second win of the weekend, and the top ranked tennis player was able to take in some practice in anticipation of the BNP Paribas Open next week which happens in Indian Wells. He needed the practice as this is the first ATP event Rafael Nadal has played since he sustained an injury to his thigh in the Australian Open.
For Belgium, Steve Darcis took the only point for the team in his match against Feliciano Lopen with a final of 6-7, 7-6 and 7-6. Spain will take on the United States in the next Davis Cup round which happens July 8th through the 10th. In other Davis Cup action, Andrey Golubev and Mikhail Kukushkin took the reverse singles matches on Sunday, which resulted in one of the largest upsets in the game, with Kazakhstan now leading 3-2 over Czech Republic. This after Kazakhstan took their spot in the Davis Cup World Group recently.
The first match that made this happen was between Andrey Golubev and Tomas Berdych, with the final in Golobev's favor 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and then Mikhail Kukushkin was in a tournament against Jan Hajek which ended 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 and 6-0. Kukushkin commented that they were extremely happy and that he got a lot of support from the crowd and the team. This is the first time Kazakhstan has been in the world cup. They will be moving onto the quarterfinals in July and will go up against Argentina. As for Czech Republic, the 2009 semifinalists will head to the playoffs.
