Juan Martin del Potro Shocks the World in the U S Open Final
It looked liked Roger Federer may never lose at the U.S Open ever again. He hadn t lost in 6 years and was well on his way to another title this year. That was until Juan Martin del Potro shocked the world on Monday and squeaked out a grueling victory against Federer to claim the US Open title.
This was the final grand slam of the year and not the way that Federer wanted to end his prolific season. However, it opened the doors for the young Argentine to steal a big of the spotlight and prove that the Men’s tennis tour won’t always be a one horse race.
Del Potro pulled away with a 3-6, 7-6(7-5) 4-6, 7-6(7-4), 6-2 victory and stormed away with the $1.6 million prize even though he is just a fresh faced 20 year old. This came just after he dominated Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, who was ranked as the best player in the world, which made him the first player ever to beat both of the superstars in the same Grand Slam event.
This would have been Roger Federer’s 6th grand slam title and would have continue to push him towards the ranking of being the best player ever, but it just didn’t happen. He is now 16-5 in career finals in majors, but this was his first ever loss to anyone in a final other than Rafael Nadal.
This weekend was just another classic example of how exciting live tennis is. No matter the rankings, how popular players are or who is the favorite, you never know who is going to step up and shock the world. This season will be one to remember, and for a lot more than just what del Potro and Federer gave us.
