It was a little bit like Christmas Kuznetsova says after losing to Safina
Dinara Safina, world number one, grabbed her first title of the season Saturday, beating out Svetlana Kuznetsova at the Italian Open Final. The two sets ended with Safina 6-3 and 6-2, giving Safina her first win after losing the last three titles. Safina lost at the Australian Open and another tournament this year, as well as losing to Kuznetsova most recently in the Porsche Grand Prix final in Stuttgart.
Kuznetsova was a little out of character this match, giving her opponant 30 unforced errors, with Safina having only about half that. Twenty-three year old Safina said, “I think that she gave me many free points, she was not at her best today.” About her performance Kuznetsova said, “It was a little bit like Christmas. I was giving too many presents.”
Safina went on to say that Kuznetsova was a difficult opponent, especially on a clay court. “I think I played really good today, “ she said.
Next up for the Russian number one is The French Open which will take place on May 24th. Last year she was beat by Ana Ivanovic, but she hopes to confirm her number one ranking by winning the tournament this year. She hopes to add a Grand Slam to her achievements at the tourney later this month.
Safini got her number one status in April, and is the younger sister of former number 1 men's tennis player Marat Safin, making the duo the only brother-sister number one pair in tennis history.
