It was the first official day of the French Open at Roland Garros today, the beginning of the first round, and we saw Samatha Stosur and Iveta Benesova go head to head. Stosur is hoping to make it back to the final this year and she is currently seeded eighth in this tournament. Iveta Benesova, from Czech Republic, is out of the French Open in the first round after Samantha Stosur trounced her 6-2,6-3. The match was the first played on Court Philippe Chatrier this year. Stosur was in the finals in 2010, but lost to Francesca Shiavone.

Now, Samantha Stosur takes on Simona Halep from Romani in round two, who beat Alla Kudryavtseva in her own first round tournament with a final of 6-2,6-1. Other wins that happened on Day One of the French Open were Julia Georges from Germany, Tsvetana Pironkova, Alize Cornet, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova from Czech Republic. $1.7 million awaits the winner of the final this year.
