Federer and Safina Given Top Seeds for U S Open
The rankings are in for the upcoming U.S.Open as excitement builds for one of the most exciting tournaments of the year. Serena Williams, the defending champion, has been given the second seed behind number one Dinara Safina. While Williams may be the favorite to win the event, the U.S. Open has always stuck to their policy to stick tightly to the world rankings no matter the other circumstances.
On the men’s side Roger Federer was given the number 1 seed for the Open for the 5th time in his career. He has won the U.S. Open five times so far and will be looking to make it a 6th in the last Grand Slam event of the year. Safina is of course the number one player in the world based on the statistical WTA computer settings, as is Federer. That is where the similarities end though as she will be looking for her first ever Grand Slam title. She needs to end her steak of being 0-3 in final matches if she wants to hold onto her number 1 ranking for a decent amount of time. However, we all know that Williams will be breathing down her neck the entire tournament.
Serena Williams has won 3 of the last 4 Grand Slam championships and a remarkable 11 titles in her entire career. If she can pull it off in this event it would be her 4th U.S Open victory. While many people felt like she deserved the number 1 spot, tournament director Jim Curley stated that they never hesitated to adhere to the rankings. They have done so tightly since 1997.
As for the rest of the women’s rankings, Venus Williams comes in at number 3 and she is followed Elena Dementieva and Jelena Jankovic. It will be interested to see how it plays out to say the least and should be yet another excited Grand Slam event that you will not want to miss.
