The United States of America and Argentina go head to head in the Fed Cup World Group First Round which you can see live here at www.watchlivetennis.org which starts at 19:00 GMT on Saturday 7^th February 2009 with tennis live online. The tie will take place in the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona on hard courts.

 

 

The two nations have only met three times in history and have not met since Argentina pulled off a shock victory in 1993. The USA have 17 fed cups to their name and although their last title came in 2000 the country has not lost in the first round for 7 years. Argentina meanwhile are yet to win the cup in their nations history but return to the World Cup group following two successive promotions, having not lost in 7 Fed Cup ties.

 

Mary-Joe Fernandez captains the USA, whilst Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Jill Craybas, Melanie Oudin and Liezel Huber are the countries official nominations for the tournament.

 

Bethanie Mattek-Sands comes into the tie as the highest ranked USA player, currently ranked 40^th in the WTA rankings. The 23-year-old is yet to win a singles title but has four WTA doubles titles to her name with the latest early last year. Jill Craybas brings experience into the side after turning pro in 1996, though the American only has 1 WTA title to her name. Melanie Oudin is the youngest member of the squad at 17-years-old and the former world junior number two turned pro just last year in February 2008. Liezel Huber brings the most experience in the Fed Cup with appearances from back in 1998 on top of the most WTA titles out of the USA squad. The WTA doubles co-number one has a massive 34 WTA doubles titles including four grand slam titles with partner Cara Black.

 

Ricardo Rivera captains the Argentina squad for their upcoming Fed Cup tie with Gisela Dulko, Betina Jozami, Soledad Esperon and Aranza Salut the official nominations for the squad.

 

Dulko leads the squad as the highest ranking player, sitting 44^th in the WTA single rankings. The 24-year-old has the most WTA titles in the squad with 3 WTA single titles and 7 WTA doubles titles with the most recent coming at Hobart last month. Betina Jozami comes into the tournament as Argentina’s number two behind Dulko, but is yet to win a WTA title with 7 ITF single titles and 13 ITF doubles titles. Soledad Esperon is also without a WTA title but has 25 ITF doubles titles and is currently Argentina’s number three in the WTA rankings. Aranza Salut comes into the tie as the lowest ranked player in the World Cup Group at 567^th place, but the 17-year-old has a bright future ahead of her with 3 titles on each of the singles and doubles ITF circuits.
