Spain are slotted to take part in the World Group playoffs, after being humbled by Canada in the first round of the same. Ukraine have made to this event, by defeating Sweden in the second round of their Zonal Group I, and will host Spain in an Outdoor Clay environment.

Without their top quality players, Spain lost to Canada 3-2, and this loss will have given them a wakeup call, as they desperately look for a win in this playoff, and thus qualify for the World Group, next year. Realizing the importance, Spain have named a strong squad for this encounter.

 

Rafael Nadal, the world number 2, has been sworn into the squad, along with Tommy Robredo, Fernando Verdasco and Marc Lopez. This shows that Spain are not taking their opponents lightly, and are expected to go for the kill.

 

Ukraine will be feeling quite confident, after qualifying for this stage, and they will be looking to build on their great performance against Sweden. However, they will need to raise their game quite a bit, if they are to give a tough time to the experienced Spanish Side.

Alexandr Dolgopolov, Sergiv Stakhovsky, Oleksandr Nedovyesov and Denys Molchanov will be taking part in the playoff, and will be hoping to counter their inexperience with skill and talent.

The World Group II first round happens February 9th and 10th between Spain and Ukraine at the Club Atletico in Montemar, Alicante, Spain. This match will take place with the two teams meeting for the first time. Spain was in the World Group after being out for three years, but they lost their spot almost immediately with a loss against Russia in the first round. They next went up against the Slovak Republic and lost that game as well, which demoted them from the highest prestige group of the Fed Cup to the World Group II.

As for Ukraine, they also got demoted last year, having lost to Italy in the in a tie in the first round of the World Group. That meant that they still needed a win for the very first time in the World Group, but when they went up against the USA they lost again 5-0, with the team including Serena Williams. The team nominations for Spain include Lourdes Dominguez Lino, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, Maria Teresa Torro-Flor and Nuria Llagostera Vives. For Ukraine, they have Lesia Tsurenko, Elina Vitolina, Yuliya Beygelzimer and Olga Savchuk.
