Kazakhstan v Italy Live
Kazakhstan will host Italy on Friday at Astana, in the first round of the 2015 Davis Cup competition. Although this should not be the most exciting tie on paper, things could definitely get interesting when the two teams squares off at the National Tennis Centre. A one-time champion, Italy hasn’t won since 1976.
Naturally, Kazakhstan hasn’t had the chance to reach those heights, and not just because they are only an independent nation since 1991. Tennis in Kazakhstan isn’t necessarily very popular. Although it might not be popular, as far as rankings go, they are not that far behind the Italians.
In Mikhail Kukushkin and Andrey Golubev, they have to very potent top 100 players on their roster. They might not be as good as Fabio Fognini or Andreas Seppi, but at home, they could definitely pull off a win or two, which could make this tie very interesting coming on Sunday.
Hard court isn’t necessarily the favorite surface of the Italians, especially when it is indoor. Regardless, considering their players’ recent form (especially Seppi’s strong last couple of months), Italy has to be considered the favorite to advance, and although the tie could definitely go into the distance, the Italians should have the edge in the end.
