Well the Davis Cup quarterfinal is upon us and there are eight teams left, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Argentina, Croatia, USA, Israel and Russia. All of the teams will face face off July 10th through the 12th. The latter two, Israel and Russia will face off at the Sport Palaces Ltd in Tel Aviv, with a potential 11,000 fans watching. This tournament will be indoors on a hard court surface. These two teams met once before on clay, and Russia was able to walk away with the win.
This is the second time for Israel to reach the quarterfinals, after defeating Sweden in the first round with a previous standing of 1-2. They were here before in 1987, and lost to Israel. Israel and Russia's head to head ended up 3-2 in 1984. Russia and Israel were the only two teams in the European Zone to win away games in this year's first round. Russia has been to the semi's for the past four years and has been in the quarterfinals no less than ten times in eleven years, making them a favorite to win this match. They beat Romania 4-1 in the first round to earn their place in this year's quarters.
The ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking started in 2001, and it is used for seeding all levels of the Davis Cup competition. It is measured using the last four years, with recent performances earning more points than previous years. After a round, the new round is figured in, and the least recent round from four years ago dropping off. The ranking stand as follows for the current season: Russia in number one spot, with Spain right behind. Number three is held by the United States and Argentina has the number four spot. Germany is currently in the fifth place.
