Boris Becker was still a household name when they emerged victorious in 1993, but Becker actually did not play in that final. It was another Grand Slam winner, Michael Stich who won the very important singles tie, in addition to pairing up with Patrih Kühnen, and defeating the famous Tom Woodbridge, Mark Woodforde duo.

A nine-time champion, France hasn’t won since 2001, but they were in the finals three times since. Their last losing effort was concluded only a couple months ago, when they were defeated by Switzerland, who emerged victorious for the first time in Davis Cup history. France has one of the deepest teams in the competition, with as many as six top 40 players waiting to get their chance.

They don’t have a Grand Slam winner, but they have several former top 10 players in Jo Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon, not to mention excellent double players like Julien Benneteau or Adrian Mannarino, who are also in the top 40 in the singles ranking. Going into Friday’sencounter, it is pretty clear that last year’s finalist France, will be the favorite to advance.
