Czech Republic and Kazakhstan are meeting for the first time, and Kazakhstan is brand new to the top tier. Czech Republic has had a pretty good run in recent years, competing in the finals in 2009 and last year making it all the way to the semifinals. They are hoping to better both of those results this year and making it all the way to the trophy. As for Czech Republic, they won the title under their previous nation’s name in 1980 and that was the only time that they were able to take it. It was Ivan Lendl and Tomas Smid who led their team to victory over Italy.
Kazakhstan got to the top tier for the first time ever by beating Switzerland 5-0 in the World Group playoff match. Czech Republic has Tomas Berdych on the team, as well as Radek Stepanek, Jan Hajek and Jiri Vesely. As for Kazakhstan, they have Andrey Golubev, Mikhail Kukushkin, Yuriy Schukin and Evgeny Korolev on the team.
