The Fed Cup began in 1919 and had its first sort of official competition in 1923. The idea of a women's team competition was the brainchild of Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman and the first official Fed Cup wasn't born until 1940. The event was known as the Federation Cup up until 1995 and this is an exciting women's team competition. The players on the side of the Czech Republic this year include team captain Petr Pala, as well as Lucie Hradecka, Petra Kvitova, Lucie Safarova and Kveta Peschke. This first round will take place at the Brno Exhibition Center.

When these two go head to head it's the Czech Republic that ends up on top. Germany has lost four of the last five times that these teams have played, and the Czech Republic holds a total of five Fed Cup titles. Last year, Spain fell to the Czech Republic but they were unable to make it past the USA in the semi-finals. The German team consists of team captain Barbara Rittner, Tatjana Malek, Kristina Barrois, Andrea Petkovic and Anna-Lena Groenefeld.
