July 10^th through the 12^th marks the quarterfinal of the Davis Cup, with eight teams competing to move onto the semis. Spain and Germany are matched up to play each other, Czech Republic faces off against Argentina, Israel and Russia will battle it out for a spot in the semis, and the United States and Croatia will be taking to the field with Croatia at home and the U.S. traveling, at Sportska Dvorana, in Porec. The United States currently has just over 9000 points in third place, while Croatia is all the way down the list in sixth place.

Over the tournament's history the United States have won the tournament 32 times and have been a runner-up 29 times. Australia has won nearly as many as the United States and have a total of 19 times finishing second. The ladies of tennis have their own version of the Davis Cup called the Fed Cup.

Croatia has an unbeaten record against the United States, although only facing them twice. They met last in 2005. Croatia got their ticket to the quarterfinals after defeating Chili in the 2009 season's first round. This will be their fourth tie in a row if they can defeat the United States. The United States certainly has the history to stop Croatia from advancing however, with 32 championships under their belts. If they make it to the semis, then this will be their fourth year in a row for doing so. They were able to play in the quarterfinals after beating Switzerland 4-1. The U.S. Were also last year's runner ups in the finals against Spain.
