This weekend is the Davis Cup playoffs and while there are six different matches going on as twelve nations try to qualify for the World Group the one were going to talk about is Chile and Austria. However, there are also matchups between The Czech Republic and Croatia at Croatia and Israel at Spain. Then we have Brazil and Ecuador playing each other, Romania and Sweden will play as well as a match-up between The Netherlands and France. It's a historic occasion for Chile and Austria, as fifty years ago they met in a Davis Cup final match played in Vienna. That was won by Chile, who won both of the previous Davis Cup matches. Both of these nations lost in the World Group first round this year with Croatia beating Chile while Austria lost to Germany, and this means that both will be fighting to keep their status on the elite team of sixteen nations. Last year Chile beat Australia in the World Group playoff to return to the elite team after spending a year relegated to America's Group One.

This is the sixth year in a row for Austria losing the first round and were forced to try to keep their status by winning in the World Group Playoffs. Spain is the current defending Davis Cup champion, after beating Argentina in the final last year. The Spainards also win the Davis Cup in 2004 and 2000.
