The Australian Open live at www.watchlivetennis.org runs from the 19th January through the 31st January. This will be the 97th edition of the Australian Open. The venue for the competition is Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is the first Grand Slam event of the year and features the very best tennis players participating in the ATP and WTA Tour. It is also the only Grand Slam event of the Asia/Pacific region. The 2008 edition of the Australian Open saw Serbian Novak Djokovic take the men's singles title and Russia's Maria Sharapova take the women's singles championship. The doubles title for men went to the Israeli team of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram while the women's doubles team from the Ukraine of Alona Bondarenko and Kateryna Bondarenko secured the title for themselves.
Among the participants on the men's side for the 2009 Australian Open live tennis tournament are number 1 and number 2 seeds Rafael Nadal and Rodger Federer respectively. Also featured is Great Britain's own Andy Murray who is currently the number 4 seed on the ATP tournament. Rounding out the top ten seeds of note are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, number 7 seed Andy Roddick of the United States, number 9 James Blake also of the USA and number 10 seed David Nalbandian of Argentina.
On the women's side talented number 1 seed Jelena Jankovic headlines a top ten featuring the Williams sisters- Serena and Venus who are ranked number 2 and number 6 respectively. Elena Dementieva of Russia checks in at number 4 while Ana Ivanovic of Serbia is the number 5 seed. Rounding out the list of notable WTA Tour standouts are number 8 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and fellow Russian Nadia Petrova.
This year's Australian Open championship on the women's side is as wide open as ever given that Maria Sharapova, the aforementioned defending champion had to withdraw from the tournament. The 2008 champion has been hampered since August of 2008 with a shoulder injury and has not been able to play as of that date. On the men's side we may very well see yet another Nadal vs Federer classic in the final.
