This year marked several changes for the tour, one of which was the name changing from 'Masters Series' to 'Masters 1000'. The 1000 refers to the amount of ranking points earned by the winner of each tournament.

Last year saw Novak Djokovik beating Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the singles tournament in Rome, while The United States took the doubles tournament with twin brothers Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan reigning over Daniel Nestor and Nenad Jimonzic 4-6,7-5, 10-8. The Bryans were also the doubles winners in 2007.

This year you can expect some serious competition as players bring their best to The Eternal City. So far three tournaments have been played in the Masters 1000 tournament this year, with Rafael Nadal winning the singles in Indian Wells and Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick from the US taking the doubles match points. In Miami, The United States stepped aside and let the UK's Andy Murray claim the singles trophy while Andy Ram from Israel and Max Mirnyi from Belarus win the doubles match. The third stop in the series was in Monte Carlo, and it proved to be lucky for Rafael Nadal once again, as he beat Serbian Novak Djokovic 6-3,2-6,6-1. The doubles saw the United States losing the trophy as the Bryan twins were beaten by Daniel Nestor and Nenad Jimonzic.
