For eight long days 56 singles and 24 doubles from the world of tennis will battle it out for 3.7 million Euros in prize money at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Madrid. This is the first year of the official 'Masters 1000' name with the 1000 referring to points in this tournament. There are nine events in the tour, the first being the Indian Wells Masters. The Madrid Masters is the fifth tournament on the Tour.

The Madrid Masters starts on May 10th and the last day is the 18th. The Masters Tournaments play on a best out of 3 match sets, and the Madrid Masters, technically called the Mutua Madrileña Masters Madrid, will face the men of pro tennis against each other, each hoping for that two out of three set win.

Madrid has only been hosting the event since 2002 and the courts are indoor and outdoor clay for the first time in the tournament. From 2003 to 2008 the tournament was played on hardcourts indoors, but it was decided this year to change that to clay.

Last year in the Men's singles final Andy Murray took on Gilles Simon and quickly won the first two sets for a win of 6-4,7-6, after having to face Roger Federer in the Semi-Finals. Federer knocked out opponent Juan Martin del Poltro in the quarter-finals with ease 6-3, 6-3, which must have made Murray sweat as he defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils. When Federer faced Murray the battle ensued and both parties fought hard, with Federer taking the first set 6-3. The second set was Murray's, bagging his own score of 6-3 and Andy finally got the upper hand on Federer in the third set, beating him 7-5.

In the doubles tournament in 2008, Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles took on Jonas Bjorkman and Kevin Ullyett and after two sets Knowles and Bhupathi stood victorious with a 6-2 and 6-4 score. Then, the semi-finals saw Jeff Coetzee and Wesley Moodie go up against Mariusz Frystenberg and Marcin Matkowski, both from Poland, with the Polish pair eventually ending up in the finals. The last round, the first set ended up two points ahead in the favor of Matkowski and Frystenberg, with Knowles and Bhupathi only scoring four points. The second set proved to be fatal for Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles when they again lost to the team from Poland with a complete wipe-up of 6-2.
