The official name of the tournament is the 2010 Barclay's World Tour Finals, and last year crowds were shocked to see both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer fall at the hand of Nikolay Davydenko on his road to the 2009 World Tour Finals title. The 2009 showdown was between Davydenko and Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro. In the doubles final, we saw Robert and Michael Bryan, the twins, take on and beat Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram and they're coming back this week to try to hold onto that title for one more year.
Headlining for the singles side of this tournament, Rafael Nadal, who has 43 titles in his career and seven so far this year. He will be just one eight singles players on the court for the final match. Another star player is Roger Federer and he joins Novak Djokovic on the field. The Serbian has 2 titles so far this year and will be hoping for a third. The rest of the eight competing in the singles include Robin Soderling, Andy Murray, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer and Andy Roddick. The traditional end of season tennis jamboree takes place from the 22nd until the 28th November 2009 at the O2 Arena in London, and it is, of course, the ATP World Tour Finals. In a nutshell, the ATP World Tour Finals is a tennis tournament that is played at the end of each year and the players participating are the current top eight players in the world rankings. Where this tournament differs from the others on the tour is the fact that this is not a straightforward knock out competition. The eight participating players are separated into two groups of four and then partake in a round robin three games against the other three in the group. The two players who finish top of each group, i.e. the two players with the best records from each group, will progress through to the semi finals, with the winners of those meeting in the final on 28th November.
There is also a doubles competition that runs side by side with the singles, again meeting the same criteria, i.e. the eight best double’s partnerships from the season, separated into two groups of four and then the best two teams of each group progressing to the semi’s.
The eight singles players qualified for this season’s tournament are, in order of their world rankings, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro, Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco and Robin Soderling (Robin Soderling replaces world number six Andy Roddick who has pulled out due to injury). The Group A line-up is Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Juan martin Del Potro and Fernando Verdasco, and Group B is Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko and Robin Soderling.
