Since 1969 the Legg Mason Tennis Classic has been a mainstay in the ATP tour and one of the most exciting stops along the year. While at the time it was one of the first professional tennis events to take place within the USA, it has since become one of the most innovative tournaments in tennis. The Washington stop on the ATP has brought blue courts, instant replay, and even video boards to the world of tennis. This year is the first time the event will be considered an ATP Word Tour 500 event, which makes it a top 20 event on the year.
As if there was not enough excitement already when it came to the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, the announcement that Andy Roddick would be returning for the event spiced up the excitement even more. This will be the first action for Roddick since he battled it out with Roger Federer in the historic and lengthy Wimbledon match. Roddick showed the world what he was capable of in Wimbledon but was devastated about being so close to a major victory. He will be joined in the tournament by such big names as defending Legg Mason champion Juan Martin Del Potro, Fernando Gonzalez, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Robin Soderling. Each of those elite players will begin their mission to the top of the tournament in the first round.
Tennis fans should not forget about young up and coming Americans John Isner and Sam Querry, as well as Lleyton Hewitt who used to be the World No. 1. While the event held in Washington does not have stars such as Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer, there will not be a lack of competition or entertaining tennis. The stars will square off on the famous blue court and see if they can make a splash on the ATP Tour.
