Top seed in this tournament is also the defending champion from last year, Spain's Fernando Verdasco, who reached the top twenty for the first time just last year, winning 47 matches that season. He seems to be advancing just a little bit every year, being number 26 in 2007 and then moving into the top twenty last year. Verdasco also helped his country win the Davis Cup title last year, as they defeated Argentina with a final of 3-1. One other highlight that makes Fernanco Verdasco worth watching: He was able to advance all the way to the fourth round in both Roland Garros and Wimbledon last year, no small feat for any tennis player.
