The Bangkok tournament was held for the first time in 2003, and is one of only two events that are held in southeast Asia. The other one is also being held this week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The first winner was Taylor Dent and other previous winners included Roger Federer, James Blake, Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga and Gilles Simon as well as Dmitry Tursunov. The top seed is Rafael Nadal, who hasn't been in a tournament since he won the U.S. Open this year. This is his first time competing in Bangkok, and if he wins it will be his first title in Asia since 2008.
The second seed is Juan Martin Del Potro, who was actually last year's U.S. Open Champion, and the third seed is Jurgen Melzer, who made it to the quarter final round in 2008 and the semi-final last year. Ernests Gulbis is the fourth seed, Viktor Troicki the fifth, the sixth and seventh Thiemo de Bakkar and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and the eighth seed is Jarkko Nieminen. The gentleman that make up the Association of Tennis Professionals, or ATP, will be going on to the Thailand Open in Bangkok starting on September 28th and this is one of the tournaments that tend to show how far the up and comers of the ATP 250 Tour has come this year. It will be held in the beautiful city of Bangkok, and the PTT Thailand Open is one of two events in southeast Asia, with the other being Kuala Lumpur. The very first was held in 2003 and it was Taylor Dent who went forward with full speed and won the title. Roger Federer dominated for two years and other winners included James Blake, Dmitry Tursunov and Jo-Wilifried Tsonga.
World Number two Rafael Nadar had to bow out because of an injury to his stomach sustained at the U.S. Open. He had planned to play in this tournament for the first time. However, Gilles Simon will be attending and is one of two top ten players in this lineup, and is number nine in the world. If he wins that will make this his first ATP World Tour Title won in Asia. Marat Safin, a former world champion and number one ranked his playing for the last time on the ATP World Tour. This is last time in Bangkok and he hopes to leave a major impression, having reached the semis in both 2004 and 2006 and lost.
Other notable players include Jo-Wilifriend Tsonga, Sam Querrey, Viktor Troicki and Dudi Sela.
