The last time that a Swedish player won this tournament was in the year 2004 and Soderling has been to the final twice before, but not able to capture the title, losing once to Mardy Fish in 2003, and then last year when he lost to David Nalbandian. Other winners of this tournament have included names like James Blake, Thomas Johansson, Todd Martin and Ivo Karlovic. Karlovic took the title in 2007, and then it was Blake for both 2006 and 2005 while the aforementioned Mardy Fish took home the championship in 2004 in a match won over Robin Soderling.

Some of the big names in this tournament besides Soderling include Tommy Haas, who is appearing in the tournament for the fifth time. He's been to the semi's twice, but never to the finals.
