All the top four seeds have been given direct entry into the second round. The top seed has been bagged by the Swiss maestro Stan Wawrinka, who seem to have become a Grand Slam specialist of sorts. He recently won the US Open title, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. World no. 6 Milos Raonic is the second seed, who is coming to Russia with a record of 43-12. Even though US Open series wasn't that eventful, he is still a terrific player capable of producing quality shots. Tomas Berdych has been seeded third, who missed out the action at the Flushing Meadows due to illness. However, he does look pretty fit now and will certainly be keen on getting a title at least towards the closing stages of season. Roberto Bautista Agut is the last of the top seeds who isn't in the top 10. Nonetheless, the Spaniard has worked really hard this season.

With two titles already and a runners-up trophy, it wouldn't be surprising to see him go the distance here. With ATP World Tour Final just around the corner, we are in store for some quality action.

The St Petersburg Open is an annual indoor hard court tournament held in St. Petersburg, Russia.

An ATP 250 event, the tournament was first held back in 1995 which means that this years’ competition would be the 21st edition if not for last year’s absence, making the 2015 event the 20th in tournament history. The total prize money of the event is a little over $1,000,000, which makes the St. Petersburg Open one of the more lucrative tournaments at that level. Between 1995 and 2013, the event was held at the Petersburg Sports and Complex which will change from this year. The Sibur Arena will take over, holding the first (and overall 20th) St. Petersburg Open. While the tournament does not have a reigning champion per say, the 2013 victor will be in the main draw, although he needed a bit of luck for that. The Latvian Ernests Gulbis did not have the necessary ranking to be in the main draw (he is having a terrible season), but he ended up being Pablo Andujar replacement who could not compete at this year’s tournament. While he will be in the main draw, it would be a huge surprise if Gulbis would end up winning.

The main favorites will be top seed Tomas Berdych (currently the 5th player in the world) or world number nine and second seed Milos Raonic from Canada.

While St Petersburg gets its hard courts prepared for the matches, the internet gets cluttered with the great successes Russia has had in the past since the great Kafelnikov victory in 1995. This year Klizan will be seen defending his 2012 title of ATP Championship, as about seven more players chase him for the cup. Fabio Fognini who finished runner up last year returns with a vengeance this year. He has to face titans of other years, including Janko Tipsarevic, the runner up of 2011. Mikhail’s name is also on the list. The player has made consistent appearances and is believed by the critics to have a great experience to his credit. The prize money for this year will be $455, 775 for the winner out of a total purse of $519, 775. The tournament is currently being advertised under the name “St Petersburg Open”.
