The AEGON Championships will be held starting the 6th of June in London, Great Britain, and will be held on grass for 627,700 pounds. This tournament has a singles draw of 56 and a doubles draw of 24. It is an ATP 250 Level tournament. The tournament will run until June 12th and it takes place at the Queens Club London. Six different players have won both the London Queens Club title and Wimbledon in the same year, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Rafael Nadal and Lleyton Hewitt.
Rafael Nadal is the top seed for this event, with Novak Djokovick as the second. British player Andy Murray, who became the first British champion since 1938 in 2009 is the third seed and fourth is Andy Roddick. Mardy Fish is fifth, Stanislas Wawrinka is sixth and seventh and eighth are Fernando Verdasco and Richard Gasquet. This tournament is on grass courts, as is the ladies tournament of the same name in Birmingham, and just like the ladies it is a full month of grass court tournaments ending with Wimbledon. The prize purse for the ATP side is 627,700 Euros and the singles draw is going to be 56 with 24 in the doubles draw. Since this tournament began in 1979, 25 of the most recent 27 champions at the Grand Slam Wimbledon have played in the AEGON Championships, making it likely that one of those playing this week will win at Wimbledon as well.
Let's take a look at the top seeds for this event. Novak Djokovic is the number one seed, with Rafael Nadal as second seed. Andy Murray is both the third seed and the defending champion, ending a 71 year wait for British fans to see one of their own win. Andy Roddick is the fourth seed and then we have Fernando Verdasco and Marin Cilic. Seventh and eighth are Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet. Another event on the ATP 250 Series Tour is the Queen's Club Championships and is will be held on the grass courts of the Queen's Club in London, England. Sponsorship has the event called the AEGON Championships, recently taken over by this sponsor is 2008. This tournament is held directly after the French Open, and is one of the four grass court events leading up to Wimbledon, including the Gerry Weber Open, the AEGON International and the Ordina Open. There is one more grass tournament that is played after Wimbledon, held in Newport, Rhode Island.
This tournament is famous for helping to create Wimbledon champions and have included winners such as Andy Roddic and Lleyton Hewitt, with Roger Federer generally preferring to compete in the Gerry Webber to prepare for Wimbledon. The tournament began in 1969 and winners over the past few years have included some of the greatest tennis players in the world. The defending champion from 2008 is Rafael Nadal who beat Novak Djokovic last year in the singles 7-6, 7-5. Before that Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt dominated the tournament for the past ten years.
Roddick beat Nicolas Mahut in singles after three sets in 2007, losing the first set 4-6 and then getting a one point win in each of the two following sets, both ending 7-6, 7-6. In 2006 Lleyton Hewitt beat James Blake in two sets and then it was Roddick again for 2005, 2004 and 2003. Lleyton Hewitt won in 2000-2002 beating Tim Henman twice and Pete Sampras once. The doubles defenders from last year were Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, who beat Marcelo melo and Andre Sa 6-4,7-6. In 2007 it was Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor while Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett took home the trophy in 2006.
Some of the players to look forward to watching in this tournament are World Number One Rafael Nadal who will be defending, as well as Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt.
