The Open De Nice Cote D Azur is an annual outdoors clay court tournament held in Nice, France. The 2015 edition is the 31st tourney in the history of the event which dates back to 1971 when the first edition was held. The total prize money for this year’s edition is €439,405 which is a rather hefty sum for the level of this event.

The tournament belongs to the ATP 250 series and it was mostly dominated by Spanish players, at least since it returned after a longer hiatus (the tourney wasn’t held between 1996 and 2009). With that said, the defending champion is currently a Latvian player Ernests Gulbis who is having a really dreadful season.

Before him the tournament was won by a Spanish player for three years straight and even if we go back until the 1994 season – which was the year when the second to last tournament was held before the hiatus -, the event was won by a Spanish player and eventual Roland Garros finalist Alberto Berasategui.

The biggest name ever who has emerged victorious here is probably Björn Borg, the 11-time Grand Slam champion. Borg won the tournament twice, first in 1977 then again a year later in 1980. The biggest favorite for this year’s event is probably top seed Gilles Simon but the main draw is extremely balanced and outside of Gulbis, any of the top 8 seeds could find themselves in the final.

No less than four players have entered the competition on the behalf of the home country, namely Roger-Vasselin, the ever progressive player; Monfils; Simon; and Mahut.

About 5 players have withdrawn their names from the tournament, including Spain’s other strong hope, Garcia-Lopez.

The defending champions of the doubles trophy, Brunstrom and Klassen, will face the historical duo of Aisam Ul Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna of the titan rivals. Three other doubles team have also entered the competition.

While Spain’s Nicolas Almagro is the defending champion in the tournament, he has decided not to take part in the competition, paving the way for top seeded Tomas Berdych to enter the tournament as the favourite.

However, even Berdych withdrew from the tournament because of fatigue and was replaced by lucky-loser Albert Montanes.

Interestingly, even the previous season’s runner-up Brian Baker has opted not to participate in the tournament.

Also taking part in the competition will be world number 17 Gilles Simon, who has been given the second seed slot, with Sam Querrey, John Isner and Andreas Seppi all seeded in the competition.

Italy’s Fabio Fognini and Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin will also look to win the title and are seeded seventh and eighth respectively.
