There are two tournaments on the WTA Tour that directly proceed the Grand Slam event at Wimbledon, and one of them is the AEGON International, a premier level tournament that happens June 13^th through the 18^th. The men of the ATP will have a singles draw of 32 and a doubles draw of 16 for this grass court event, and it has only been since 2009 that this has been a combined women's and men's tournament, with just the ladies of the WTA participating before that. The top player for the men is Jo Wilfried Tsonga, with Alexandr Dolgopolov, who reached the semi finals in this tournament in 2010 last year as the second seed. Janko Tipsarevic and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez are the fourth and fifth and Sergiy Stakhovsky is fifth and the rest are Kevin Anderson, Lleyton Hewitt and Pablo Andujar.

 

 

For the ladies, Vera Zvonareva is the top seed, with Li Na, the winner of the French Open at Roland Garros this year, the second seed. Victoria Azarenka is the third seed, and Francesca Schiavone is the fourth. The fifth and sixth seeds are Petra Kvitova and Marion Bartoli, and the last two are Samantha Stosur and Andrea Petkovic from Germany. A combined ATP World Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour will happen from June 12^th through the 19^th and it is in Eastbourne, U.K. at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club. This event has been held since 1974 and it is a WTA Premier Level event and an ATP 250 event. Let's take a look at the ATP side of this tournament first. It is worth € 405,000 to the men of the ATP, and will feature a singles draw of 32 and a doubles draw of 16. The top seed for the men's side is Feliciano Lopez who is riding high after sending world number one Rafael Nadal out of the quarters last week. Second seed is Nicolas Almagro, Third is Julien Benneteau and Guillermo Garcia Lopez is fourth. Fifth and sixth seeds on the men's side are Lukasz Kubot and Andreas Seppi, while our final two are James Blake and Horacio Zaballos.

The tennis event at Eastbourne that includes both WTA and ATP players begins on Monday, June 15^th. It's called the AEGON International, played on grass courts, and it worth $600,000 to the ladies of the WTA. The men are competing for 450,000 Euros in prize money. This event, held just before Wimbledon, will feature some of the best women's and men's tennis players in the world.

 

 

The 2008 men's singles was won by Ivo Karlovic, who defended his 2008 title and was seeded number four at the time, beat Fernando Verdasco in three sets, 7-5, 6-7, 7-6. The ladies singles final was between Agnieszka Radwanska and Nadia Petrova and the 2 hour and 37 minute match was some of the most exciting tennis played that year, with the fourth seeded Radwanska beating Petrova, the opponent with more experience, in three sets, 6-4, 7-6, 6-4.

 

The tournament will be held at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club, which is near the town square is Eastbourne, Britain, and is surrounded by gardens and trees. The courts are outdoor grass and is the site of several major tennis tournaments throughout the year. The courts are set up to mirror the design of the Wimbledon courts, with the first major championships held in 1881.
