Dubai Tennis Championships Live
After a superb performance in the Dubai by the ladies, the focus now shifts to men as the ATP Dubai is set to be played this week. The top seed is the World No. 1 Andy Murray, who has had a decent start to the season.
He last played in Australian Open, where he lost in the fourth round to Mischa Zverev. Prior to that, he was the runner-up in Qatar Open. Given the pool of players this time, he's in for a massive fight. The second seed is the World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka, who was the semifinalist in Melbourne, where he lost to the eventual champion Roger Federer. Interestingly, the Swiss maestro too is playing in the tournament as the third seed and has been placed in the same bracket as Murray. Federer has a decent record in Dubai, having won the event in 2012 and 2014. Gael Monfils has been seeded fourth for the tournament, as the Frenchman looks to build on his newly found success.
He played in ATP Marsellie last week, where he lost in the third round to Richard Gasquet. Apart from them, Tomas Berdych and Roberto Bautista Agut will also be participating, making this tournament a must to watch.

An outdoor hard court tournament, the 2016 Dubai Tennis Championships (24th edition in tournament history) will start on the 22nd of February. The event is an ATP 500 competition with a $1.928.340 total prize money.
The reigning champion is the Swiss Roger Federer who will unfortunately not be able to defend his title this time around. The 17-time Grand Slam champion has suffered a serious injury for the first time in his career. After the day of his Australian Open semifinal loss (which came by the hand of his rival Novak Djokovic) Federer ruptured the meniscus ligament in his left knee. He will miss at least two months, so naturally cannot compete at Dubai. With the absence of the Swiss, his compatriot Stan Wawrinka will be the second seed, following the Serbian who is the undisputed best player in the world these days. The third seed will be the Czech Tomas Berdych who started out the year rather badly.
Interestingly, not only these three players will be the only top 10 players in the main draw, but with a single exception, all the other seeds will come outside of the top 20. This makes the Serbian the overwhelming favorite and if he is healthy, Wawrinka is really the only player who can theoretically challenge him.

The first Dubai Duty Free Championships has been held more than two decades ago, back in 1993, and the Czech Karel Novacek was first champion in tournament history. During the 90’s, the best players did not really attend the tournament, which has changed going into the 2000’s when the tourney had become an ATP 500 event.
Among this prestigious hard court tournament’s elite, the most successful is 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who emerged victorious on six different occasions. Other notable winners include Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Thomas Muster and Goran Ivanisevic. All of those players are also Grand Slam champions, but from that list and in Dubai, only Djokovic managed to win on more than one occasions, capturing the tile on four different occasions.
The reigning champion at the tournament is Roger Federer, who somewhat surprisingly went all the way last year, defeating Djokovic in the semifinal before beating Tomas Berdych in the final, coming back from one set to love. That victory was the Swiss’ sixth crown at the City of Gold, which is an absolutely record. The Serbian however – who will be the favorite this upcoming week –, can get close to him if he can emerge victorious there for the fifth time in his career.
