The ATP Challenger goes to Zagreb for a tournament this week, also holding the ATP Challenger Biella. The tournament runs from May 10th through the 16th and is held on Clay courts, joining a total of five different ATP Challenger tournaments this week. The top seed for this tournament is going to be Marcos Daniel from Brazil, who will face Nikola Mektic from Croatia in round number one. Second seed is Nicolas Massu from Chile, and he'll go up against another Croatian in round one, Antonio Veic. Third seed for the Zagreb Open is Blaz Kavcic from the Slovak Republic and the fourth seed is Daniel Koellerer.
The fifth seed will face Yuri Schukin in round one and his name is Somdev Devvarman from India, while the sixth seed is Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo. The seventh seed will be Santiago Ventura from Spain and the eighth for this event is Grega Zemlja from Slovak Republic. The Zagreb Open starts on Saturday, May 9th and the Men of professional tennis are gearing up to compete in the singles and doubles draws for eight days, hoping to make it to the finals and take home the 2009 Zagreb Open trophy. The tournament is played on Red Clay outdoor courts, at the Sportski Park Mladost in Zagreb, Croatia. It's a traditional part of the ATP Challenger Tour, which has held this tournament in Zagreb since 1996.
Players expected to compete in the Zagreb Open include Jesse Levine, Robert Kendrick, Amer Delic and Brendon Evans, all from the USA as well as French player Nicolas Devilder, who is ranked number 64 in the ATP. France is also bringing Olivier Patience. Germany's players include Denis Gramelmayr and Daniel Brands and Leonardo Mayer and Brian Dabul, both from Argentina are competing, just to name a few.
Last year in the singles tournament the players competed for the Zagreb Open title, with Christophe Rochus taking the title easily from opponent Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-4. The doubles pitted hometown boy Ivan Dodig and Brazillian Julio Silva against Sergly Stakhovsky from the Ukraine and Czech Tomas Zib. Dodig and Silvia ended up winning 6-4, 7-6 which made the fans from Croatia go crazy.
