The Sibiu Open is an interesting tournament, because it is one of the latest European clay court tournaments, played well into the hard court season where most tourneys are not only played on hard, but indoors.

Nevertheless, with a substantial, €64,000 total prize money the organizers can offer an incentive to the players that is hard to resist. Those who are better on the dirt than they are on hard courts, gladly visit Sibiu this week, trying to say goodbye to the European clay for a couple of months with a good result. A recent tournament, the Sibiu Open has only been held on three previous occasions. The three winners we had so far are Adrian Ungur, Jaroslav Pospisil and Jason Kubler from last year. With the exception of Ungur, none of these players were able to crack the top 100 in their career. In the defense of Kubler, we have to mention that the Aussie is still only 22 years old. On top of that, he also had a serious knee injury that hampered his progress.

Out of those three, only Ungur will compete this year. If there is a runaway favorite for the title, it’s probably top seed Dusan Lajovic.
