The Open Castilla Y Leon is an annual outdoor hard court tournament held in Segovia, Spain. This year s tournament will be the 30th edition which makes the event one of the oldest Challenger level tourneys. The reigning champion is Adrian Mannarino who won’t compete anywhere this week. The total prize money for the event will be over €110,000, most of which will find its place next to the player who ‘s left standing come Sunday.

If we take a look at the past winners, we instantly see that if it’s not a Spanish player who wins, it’s usually a French. These two nations has won a grand total of 20 tournaments out of the 29 that’s been held so far. Needless to say that despite Mannarino not entering any tournaments this week, we could very well see another French winner.

If it’s not one of Mannarino’s compatriots, it will probably be top seed Marcel Granollers who starts out the tournament as not only the top seed, but possibly the biggest threat to go all the way during this week.

This year it has come back and will be held on the 28th of July through the 3rd of August. The Hard courts of the Villa De El Espinar will be put to use in order for this tournament to take place.

The total prize is in the highest tiers of normal ATP Tournaments, set at 106,500 Euros. The current defending champion in this tournament is Pablo Carreno who beat out Albano Olivetti in the last year’s final.


Open Castilla y Leon has a relatively longer history, being first played in 1986 as a Spanish Tennis Federation event, and then since 1991 as a Challenger Tournament for the Association of Tennis Professionals

Spain is definitely no underdog in the Tennis world. It is the country of one of the biggest tennis stars ever to set foot on Earth, Rafael Nadal. Held in Segovia, Spain with a total prize money of €42,500 and a separate amount of money for hospitality, this tournament is one of Spain’s largest tournaments. Before 1990, when it started in 1986, it used to be a Spanish Tennis Federation event but since then it has been an ATP Challenger Tour event and has served as a big opportunity for Tennis players to come and play at.

It is played on the outdoor hard courts of the Villa de El Espinar and features some of the best players around the world as well as from the Spanish nation itself. Last year’s winner was Evgeny Donskoy of Russia. Let’s not forget that this is the same tournament that Rafael Nadal won back in 2003 thus is one of the first tournaments that brought him so much fame.

The only person to have won this twice back to back is Rodolphe Gilbert of France in 1994 and 1995. It is going to be featuring both Singles men and Doubles men categories and will be one tournament that should be watched. It will be played this week from 29th of July to the 3rd of August, 2013.

This week on the ATP Challenger Tour there is only one major tournament that is to be played, and it happens in Segovia, Spain, on hard surfaces for 42,500 Euros. This event is officially called the Open Castilla y Leon Villa de El Espinar, happening in Spain from the 20th of August to the 26th on hard composan surfaces. This tournament begn in the seventies, thirty-three years ago. The first seven years of the tournament, it was an amateur and pro-am event, but for the past twenty six it has been a professional fixture on the Challenger Tour.

This tournament has some some serious stars pass through. Among those who have played in the El Espinar, Rafael Nadal, Also, Fernando Verdasco, Tim Herman, Yevgeny Kafenikov and Feliciano Lopez have played here along with Juan Martin del Potro. The top seed this year is Daniel Gimeno Traver and then Daniel Munoz de la Nava will take the next spot. Dusan Lajovic and Evgeny Donskoy are third and fourth. Konstantin Kravchuk is the fifth seed, and the final three are Kenny De Schepper, Facundo Arguello and Ivan Navarro.

A tournament is Segovia, Spain is our showcase tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour this week, but there are several others as well, all to allow the tennis stars of tomorrow a chance to prove themselves, and earn money and points. Also happening this week, a tournament in Vancouver, Canada, one in Beijing China on and those two plug the Sergovia tourney are all played on hard courts. There is a clay court tournament in Trani, Brazil for 30,000 Euros as well and then another hard court for $50,000 in Campos Do Jordao, Brazil.

The number one seed for this tournament, which is officially titled the 2011 Open Castilla y León, and happens August 1st through the 7th is Mikhail Kukushkin while the second is France's Nicolas Mahut. The third seed in this tournament is Slovak Republic's Karol Beck and the fourth is Rainer Schuettler. The rest of the top eight include Teymuraz Gabashvili, Kenny de Schepper, Ruben Bemelmans and Arnaud Clement.
