The Sarasota Open is an annual ATP Challenger Tour tournament held in Sarasota, USA. The reigning champion of the event is the Australian Nick Kyrgios who defeated Filip Krajinovic last year.
This year’s tournament will be the seventh edition of the event, with a total prize money of $100,000. Being a Challenger Tour tournament, the event cannot really attract the very elite, but that doesn’t mean they cannot attract elite talents.
Kei Nishikori for example, was the 2010 winner here. The Japanese went on to win eight titles since and even made a Grand Slam final at last year’s US Open. Not to mention, he is currently the fourth player in the world. The organizers saw an elite talent in the 2011 final too, when a former top 10 player in James Blake won the event.
The American is retired now but he had a very long and fruitful career, winning 10 titles and peaking at the nr.4 position on the ranking back in 2006 before he made the World Tour Finals, losing to Roger Federer.
In addition to those names, Kyrgios won last year but won’t try to defend his title. The Aussie withdrew from Monte Carlo as well, nursing an injury. The top favorite will be the American Tim Smyczek.
