Challenger San Marino Live
The ATP Challenger tournament in San Marino known as the San Marino Cepu Open is August 3rd through the 9th and is played on clay courts for a prize purse of 85,000 Euros. The first match of the first day features Paolo Lorenzi and Martin Alund at Center Court, followed by Tomas Tenconi and Filippo Volandri. Evening matches at Center Court are Pablo Andujar and Potito Starace, and then Andreas Seppi and Gaston Gaudio after that. 32 names make up the roster for the singles draw, while sixteen pairs were created for the doubles.
This ATP Challenger tournament event is held every year at the Centro Tennis Cassa di Risparmio de Fonte dell'Ovo, which may hold the record for the longest name of a venue in professional tennis period. The stadium is located in City of San Marino, in the republic of San Marino which is the oldest sovereign state in the world, located right in the middle of Italy and populated with an estimated 30,000 citizens. This constitutional republic has the smallest population of all of the Council of Europe members, but has some great tennis played every year. The San Marino Cepu Open has been played there since 1988, but only as an ATP International Series event since 1998, becoming a challenger in 2002.
Over the past few years champions have come from many nations to win the singles and doubles competitions of San Marino, including some of those competing this year. In 2005, Juan Antonio Marin beat Sasa Tuksar for the final, and Albert Montanes did it the next year. Potito Starace, one of those competing at Center Court the first day this year, won in 2007 against Montanes and last year the singles champion was Filippo Volandri, another competitor this year, who beat 2007 champion Starace 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. The doubles champs for last year were Yves Alegro and Horia Tecau.
